A Private Access Expedition to the Roof of the Bhutanese Himalayas: The Royal Highland
Festival & The Nomads of Laya
Photo Tour Highlights
Venture deep into Bhutan’s highland heart on a journey designed around one of the country’s most extraordinary events—the Royal Highland Festival in remote Laya, where nomadic communities gather in a breathtaking Himalayan amphitheater to celebrate tradition, endurance, and the spirit of the mountains. Trek into the clouds to reach Laya Village, Bhutan’s highest settlement, and witness colorful pageantry, highland sports, and ancient customs set against snow-dusted peaks. Then descend into the quiet charm of Haa Valley, the misty beauty of Phobjikha, and the cultural richness of Paro and Thimphu. From yak herders and masked dancers to sacred cliffs and serene valleys, this once-in-a-lifetime experience offers a rare blend of adventure, culture, and authenticity in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.

Photo Expedition Highlights
- The Royal Highland Festival Masterclass: Document one of the world’s highest-altitude cultural events (approx. 12,500ft). This festival was established by the King of Bhutan to celebrate the unique culture of the highland nomads. Capture the extraordinary sight of high-altitude wrestling, yak races, and traditional nomadic songs against a backdrop of towering Himalayan peaks.
- The Laya Nomad Portraits: Secure intimate access to the Layaps, the “people of the hidden land.” Known for their unique conical bamboo hats and distinctive dress, these semi-nomadic yak herders offer some of the most compelling environmental portraiture opportunities on the planet.
- High-Altitude Landscape Immersion: Explore the rugged beauty of the Gasa district and the northern frontier. We focus on the dramatic scale of the mountains, the textures of yak-hair tents, and the crystal-clear alpine light that only exists at these altitudes.
- The Sacred Fortress of Gasa: Explore the white-washed Gasa Dzong, a fortress that appears to float above the clouds. We conduct specialized architectural and low-light shoots within the courtyard to capture the interplay of monastic life and mountain mist.
- The Descent into Punakha: Contrast the rugged highlands with the lush subtropical Punakha Valley. We conclude with a “Blue Hour” session at the Punakha Dzong, focusing on the river reflections and the vibrant jacaranda (seasonal) or autumn colors framing the ancient structure.
The Photographer’s Advantage
- Rare High-Altitude Access: The Royal Highland Festival is logistically challenging for most travelers. We handle the specialized high-altitude transport and logistics, ensuring you are positioned for the best shots while staying comfortable in extreme environments.
- Golden Hour Logistics: At 12,000+ feet, the light is incredibly sharp. Our itinerary is built around these peaks of light, prioritizing early morning sessions at the nomad camps and sunset over the Gasa peaks.
- Strictly Limited Footprint: Capped at 12 photographers. In a remote highland setting, keeping the group small is essential for maintaining a low profile and securing authentic, non-disruptive shots of the nomadic competitions.
- Technical Gear & Power Support: We provide specialized vehicle support and portable power solutions to ensure your gear remains functional and your batteries charged in the cold, remote northern frontier.
- The “Scout’s” Authority: Backed by 30 years of field experience and Explorers Club credentials, we navigate the cultural nuances of the Laya community to ensure respectful and exclusive documentary access.
Founder’s Field Note
“The Royal Highland Festival is, quite literally, the peak of Bhutanese exploration. To stand at 12,000 feet and witness the pride of the Laya people as they celebrate their heritage is a visual experience unlike any other. I have spent decades scouting the world’s remote corners, but the air in Gasa feels different—it’s purer, and the stories told through the lens here are deeper. My mission is to guide you through this thin-air frontier to capture the grit, grace, and grandeur of a people who live at the very edge of the sky.”
