A Private Access Mission to the Altai Mountains & The Kazakh Frontier
Tour Highlights
This journey offers a perfect balance of Mongolia’s vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and unique traditions. Begin with a guided city tour of Ulaanbaatar, where you’ll explore the capital’s highlights—from historic monasteries and Soviet-era landmarks to museums and art show that showcase Mongolia’s rich heritage.
Continue to the scenic wilderness of Terelj National Park, a stunning region of granite cliffs, rolling hills, and river valleys. Here, you’ll experience the beauty of nature and nomadic life, visiting iconic sites such as Turtle Rock and Aryapala Meditation Temple.
On the way, stop at the impressive Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue Complex, the world’s largest equestrian statue, which stands as a striking monument to Mongolia’s legendary leader. Climb up to the horse’s head for panoramic views across the steppe.
Finally, immerse yourself in one of Mongolia’s most remarkable cultural traditions at the Golden Eagle Festival. Held by Kazakh hunters of western Mongolia, this festival showcases the centuries-old art of hunting with trained golden eagles. You’ll witness competitions of speed, skill, and tradition, along with vibrant displays of Kazakh culture, music, and hospitality.
This tour combines Mongolia’s ancient history, stunning landscapes, and living traditions, giving you a deep and memorable insight into the country’s heart and spirit.

Photo Expedition Highlights
- The Golden Eagle Festival Masterclass: Secure “inside the circle” positioning for two full days at the world’s most spectacular gathering of Kazakh hunters. Capture high-speed action shots of eagles returning to their masters’ arms, traditional archery, and the intense Kyz Kuar (horseback games) against the rugged Altai backdrop.
- Private Steppe Portraiture: We bypass the general festival crowds to facilitate private, non-staged portrait sessions with champion eagle hunters. Focus on the rich textures of handmade fox-fur coats, weathered skin, and the piercing gaze of the eagles in the natural light of the Mongolian steppe.
- The Genghis Khan Monolith at Dawn: A specialized sunrise shoot at the world’s largest equestrian statue. We time our arrival to capture the 130-foot stainless steel monument as it reflects the first light of day, rising dramatically from the surrounding grasslands.
- Nomadic Life in Terelj: Explore the granite cliffs and river valleys of Terelj National Park. Document the traditional life of nomadic families, focusing on the atmospheric interiors of their gers and the vast, cinematic landscapes of the “Land of the Eternal Blue Sky.”
- High-Altitude Altai Landscapes: Journey to the far western frontier of Bayan-Ö lgii. This is a masterclass in scale and perspective, offering opportunities to photograph the snow-capped peaks and desolate beauty of one of the most remote regions on Earth.
The Photographer’s Advantage
- Light-First Mission Control: We don’t follow a tourist bus schedule. Our movements are dictated by the sun, ensuring you are in the field for every Golden Hour on the steppe and every atmospheric sunrise in the mountains.
- Strictly Limited Footprint: Capped at 16 participants, but specifically optimized for small-group shooting pods. This ensures you have clear sightlines of the hunters and aren’t competing with a wall of tourists for the definitive “eagle-in-flight” shot.
- Technical Gear & Power Support: Operating in the remote Altai requires specialized support. Our expedition team provides the power capacity needed to charge professional camera bodies and run backup drives in nomadic environments.
- The “Scout’s” Authority: With 30 years of field experience and Explorers Club credentials, I have built the local trust necessary to move our group “beyond the ropes,” providing access to the hunters’ private camps away from the public eye.
- Small-Batch Logistics: We utilize specialized 4WD vehicles and local fixers who understand the specific needs of a photographer—knowing exactly where to stop for the best composition, not just the best view.
Founder’s Field Note
“To stand on the Altai steppe and hear the wings of a Golden Eagle cutting through the silence is a transformative experience for any visual storyteller. I have led expeditions through 80 countries, but Mongolia remains the ultimate frontier for raw, honest photography. My mission for this trip is to take you past the festival spectacles and into the real lives of the hunters and the silence of the Gobi. We are here to document an ancient bond between man and nature that has survived for centuries. We don’t just take pictures of history; we step into it.”
